quick comment–somebody else mentioned how this internet meme was not only harmful to this woman but also had a lot to do with this stigmatic association of plastic surgery and east asian women. i think that’s partially true, but i think another part of it is this stereotype of east asians as weird, alien, backwards people. (i personally see this stuff more frequently spread about china than anything else but anyways.)
like even when people here like to parade themselves as ~progressive~ and not racist or whatever i still see y’all reblogging shit of east asians doing strange things, usually weird challenges that we do on reality or game shows, and without any kind of context or research y’all are quick as fuck to go “lol wtf japan”. and to go even further when we have misinformation like this spread, do you research? do you stop to think, “hmm maybe i should confirm this”? nah, you just jump straight into talking about how backwards and oppressive our countries are, i’ll see comments like “well if even CHINA can understand this is wrong so should you” as if we’re all inherently evil or something.
anyway that was not a quick comment at all but i’m annoyed as fuck about this
That “Immigrants don’t steal your jobs, they get jobs while you’re sitting around thinking you’re too good for them!” thing annoys me.
Because that’s – not what’s really going on?
What it actually is is “Immigrants are victims of a system set up to take advantage of them, in which employers and businesses use the fact that immigrants are more often than not in difficult, dangerous positions to strong-arm them into working long hours in often unhygienic or dangerous jobs for less than minimum wage.
“And the organisations that do that are often either the same as or in bed with the organisations that push the ‘Immigrants steal your jobs / immigrants want to push their values on the entire country / immigrants don’t deserve benefits’ narrative, because it allows them to not only socially isolate immigrants and make them more susceptible to being taken advantage of, but also to do things like refuse immigrants benefits that would allow them to viably consider not working for less than minimum wage in sub-par conditions, and to frame any attempt by immigrants to politically organise themselves and push for fair treatment as them being dangerously subversive.
“While the ‘immigrants steal your jobs’ thing is bullshit, it’s calculated bullshit pushed by politicians and businesses at a working class population in conjunction with an equally calculated strategy of enacting laws that endanger that population’s livelihoods and labour rights, at a time when the shenanigans of politicians and businesses have caused an employment crisis and a recession, because it’s easy to turn people who are terrified into bigots, and it’s politically advantageous to do so.”
…
I mean, I realise that that’s less pithy.
But it also doesn’t glorify the horrible conditions and sub-par wages that immigrants are subjected to, so there’s that.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
And not just the really low-wage ones too. People gripe about H1B visas a lot (esp with the tech industry) but often ignore just how much people are exploited – bad pay, forced to pay for their own visa, etc – to gain access.
It saddens me to see that even supposedly radical progressive folk buy into this kind of “job-stealer” rhetoric.
That would be Charles A. Ridley, creator of the 1942 short film “Lambeth Walk: Nazi Style.”
Basically, Ridley edited the Nazi propaganda film “Triumph of the Will” to make it look like Hitler and the Nazi soldiers were dancing by reversing and speeding up the footage and taking audio of Hitler saying “Heil” and syncing it with the music.
It’s worth pointing out that “[Ridley] used the music because members of the Nazi party had called the tune “Jewish mischief and animalistic hopping”.” In short, well, up yours, mate.
