Donkey Kong seems to drift in and out of Tumblr’s mass conscious like the tides. This moon, Donkey Kong excitement is based around this image.
The image is old, however it’s recent resurgence has prompted a wave of brand new dong humor.
Taking the joke further, Tumblr users began using words other than dong
Followed by editing the cover art of games beyond Donkey Kong
At this point, we are crossing a frightening boundary. We think of memes as independent entities, but all ideas exist in a common space. If we think of an idea as a point in this space, then as a collection of similar ideas, memes can be viewed as a cluster of points.
Like the universe expanding to infinity, Expand Dong is expanding further and further until it has no identifiable center. Its derivatives are moving so far from the center that they are approaching other centers. Compare this “expand dong” image with two images which predate it.
Like galaxies colliding, or an amoeba consuming its kin, Expand Dong is expanding directly into the course of other memes. The implications are staggering. Are new memes a sustainable resource? Are we beginning to settle onto the last untilled soil of the human mind’s capacity for ideas?
Will we one day look around this thoughtscape to find a total lack of new territory? Will we think to ourselves “This is our fault. The fault of our ravenous hunger to grow, to expand. To expand dong.”
