the new birds are officially named jane and morris

roachpatrol:

anyway here’s the bird news, we’re working on hand-feeding and have had 3 sessions today. i pick up some millet and stick my hand in the cage for them to behold my millet.

session one, morning:

morris thinks about it hard but decides maybe nah. jane decides nah early on and sticks firmly to her position (huddled suspiciously against the bars).

session two, afternoon:

morris and jane have had many hours to meditate on the bag of millet set outside the cage where they can see it. both perk up when they see me take a nub out.

morris is anxious but acquisitive. he makes a lot of false starts until jane looks like she might be reconsidering her ‘definitely nah’ stance on having anything to do with me, and then he goes for it.

morris learns: sometimes the other hand makes a big sudden gesture but nothing bad happens; fingers are squishy when you chew on them but nothing bad happens; you can take the millet nub off the hand and it will fall on to the plate and nothing bad happens; you can eat it on the plate but then something bad happens, which is that jane will come down and you have to share.

jane learns: morris makes an excellent meat shield.

session three, evening:

morris stands at the front of the cage, looks at me, looks at millet, makes peeps. obligingly i get some millet and stick my hand in. after a shorter period of uncertain feints and skitters, he comes over and chows down. carefully raising the millet while spreading my fingers induces him to grab on and climb up in exasperation, then huddle over the millet like a tiny tiny vulture.

morris learns: if you and the millet stay on the hand, jane is a wuss, and you don’t have to share.

jane learns: you can eat all the millet knocked on the plate next to and under the hand that you want. you can also push the hand around to get the snacks it’s blocking. you can stick your head over the hand to see if morris will share, but he will not. he will put his foot on your shoulder to keep you at a distance. all is fair in love, war, and millet.

#jane and morris are named after jane morris goodall#because#anyone who doesn’t think their birds are primatologists is fooling themself

A Nixon adviser admitted the war on drugs was invented to criminalize black people

John Ehrlichman, a former adviser to President Richard Nixon, said the war on drugs was invented to criminalize black people and suppress the radical left, according to an article published by Harper’s. While this doesn’t reveal that much new information, the full quote and admission is so shockingly blunt it crashed Harper’s website.
