Also, I cringe when I hear things like “everyone is the hero of their own story” or “everyone thinks they’re doing the right thing.”

White hats think they’re heroes.  And yeah, you can get conflict between people who each think they’re doing the right thing, but disagree on what that is. You can have Valjean vs. Javert.  You can have wars where each side is “fighting for their country.”

But black hats don’t think they’re the good guys. Black hats think they’re bad guys, and revel in it.

When a finance guy brags about shocking his coworkers by investing in a company that strips the bark off rainforest trees – which is a thing I have seen in real life – that’s the black-hat attitude.
