If you are any (or multiple!) of the following:

  • Caucasian
  • Cisgendered
  • Neurotypical
  • Able-bodied
  • Middle or upper class
  • Male

You should not feel ashamed for being the way you are! I know Tumblr, and many other places, will try to shame you for things you don’t have much (if any) control over, simply because you have any of these privileges.

They shouldn’t.

What’s important is treating everyone with dignity and respect. I am a female-bodied androgyne with a load of physical and mental disabilities! But I am caucasian, and I do my best to treat people the same regardless of their race.

That’s all anybody should do.

Privilege means being in a position to change things for people who don’t have it. Let’s make sure those changes are for the better.

this.  privilege doesn’t mean ‘feel bad about these qualities’.  it means ‘notice when these qualities improve your life over others’, and try to help pull other people up with you’.

This, this, this. Privilege is a part of the system, and intersectionality generally means that everyone’s got some area they can trump other people in, in the awful chutes-and-laddersesque game of social justice cage-matches.

Shame is a useless paralytic, and guilt is only useful only so far as it comes with a determination to change. If your reaction to being told to check your privilege is one of hurt, outrage, and denial, this is no help to anyone. If your reaction is to stop, examine yourself and your actions, and listen to what people are saying to you, you’re making excellent progress. Cheer up, take a deep breath, and feel good.
